Risk Factors

    1) Smoking: 25% Association
    2) Gender: Men at higher risk.
    3) Obesity: Increases the risk by 20-50%
    4) Old Age: two thirds above 65.
    5) Race: African American & Ashkenazic Jewish
    6) Family History or Inherited Genetic Syndromes.
    7) Type II Diabetes
    8) Chronic pancreatitis
    9) Cirrhosis of the liver
    10) Helicobacter pylori Infection of Stomach.

Be alert for any abnormal changes

    1. abdominal pain, back pain,
    2. change in bowel habit, dyspepsia/reflux, nausea/vomiting,
    3. jaundice,
    4. lethargy,
    5. weight loss

How to prevent pancreatic cancer

    1) Stop smoking
    2) Choose a healthy diet: limit red meat & processed food.
    3) Maintain a healthy weight.
    4) Physical Activity: Reduces the risk by 12-37%
    5) Avoid or Limit alcohol use.
    6) Control Diabetes.
    7) Limit exposure to carcinogenic chemicals: chlorinated hydrocarbons and aliphatic solvents, nickel and chromium compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and organochlorine insecticides.
    8) Screening: CT or MRI and Endoscopic Ultrasound.
    9) Preventive surgery: Resection.
